Why & How to Use a Concrete Calculator

Unless you have many years of experience in the business, it’s a tricky thing trying to work out how much concrete you’re going to need for a project. Thankfully, here at concrete specialists Essex Mix, we’ve given you access to a handy concrete calculator that’s convenient, easy to use and reliably accurate.

It’s been a feature on our website for a while now, so we thought it high time that we took a closer look at how to use it and how to make the most of it.

Why Should You Use A Concrete Calculator?

If you don’t have confidence in your maths skills when it comes to doing volumetric concrete calculations, our online calculator can remove the stress and make sure you always get the right answer – as long as you can take accurate measurements, anyway!

So the best reason for using a concrete calculator is to give you a very close approximation of how much concrete you’ll be needing for a project without having to dig deep to remember maths you last used in your schooldays. Unfortunately, the alternative – making a guess, no matter how educated a guess you think it may be – is hardly ever going to be good enough. It’s all too easy to order too much or, even worse, too little – and too little could be disastrous if you only discover that’s what you’ve got halfway through laying it.

How To Use Our Concrete Calculator

Our concrete calculator can be used for a range of different concreting jobs – such as slabs, footings, posts and topsoil – and really couldn’t be easier. All you need are two (radius and depth for posts) or three (length, width and depth for slabs, footings and topsoil) measurements and you’re away. You can enter your measurements in metres, centimetres, millimetres, yards, feet or inches – just make sure that your unit of measurement matches the one from the drop down list on the calculator. Then click on the Calculate button. As an example: choose to calculate the amount of concrete you’ll need for footings: enter 5 metres for width, 5 metres for length and 1.5 metres for depth. The result you get is 37.50 square metres of concrete required. (Note: regardless of which measurement you use initially, the calculator will always produce a result in square metres.) You can then place your order!

How To Get The Most Out Of Our Concrete Calculator

We call it a concrete calculator, but it can really be used to measure any volume for any application – as we’ve mentioned already, it can also be used to calculate the amount of topsoil you’ll need when laying a lawn.

Our calculator works best when calculating volumes for standard shapes – squares, rectangles and circles – but not every job works with standard shapes. Should you be faced with working with an unusually shaped project, your best bet would be to ‘draw’ the smallest rectangle or circle you can around it and use that.
